So you can probably tell by the title of this post that I’m having cake issues. First a little background story.
I love cake. No, I’m serious. I really LOVE cake. Birthday cake, celebration cake, homemade cake, and of course wedding cake. From what I understand, I’ve been blessed in my life to have had some really good wedding cake. I just don’t get people who say that they don’t like to eat cake at weddings. How can you not want to eat wedding cake? If done right, the wedding cake is the crown jewel at the reception. A fabulous cake is one that is so beautiful that you almost don’t want to eat it. It’s like eating a delicious work of art. But when you do eat it, it’s so moist in the center and the icing so sugary and tasty. It really is an experience.
I’ve always been one of those traditional wedding cake girls. To this day, I really don’t care for chocolate cake. It’s not that I don’t like chocolate or cake or the combination of the two. It’s just that I love my white and yellow cakes so much more. I don’t really know why, so I’m not even going to try to be poetic about it. I just love white cake. And there is no icing in the world better than a homemade southern buttercream. Just thinking about it makes me turn into something similar to a drooling Homer Simpson thinking of a donut.
However, I will admit that I have had some bad wedding cakes. No one cake comes to mind, but after thinking of my previous wedding cake experience and hearing the horror stories from friends of mine, I began to wonder if I should really put in all the work I knew it would take to find the perfect cake. If no one was going to eat the cake and no one really cared, why should I bother. Well, I bother because as I previously mentioned, I LOVE CAKE.
By now you’re asking if I really love cake that much. I’ll put it into some perspective. I’ve budgeted almost twice as much money for my cake than I’ve spent on my wedding dress (Well, that’s a little skewed. I did find the perfect dress for an unbeatable low price). With a very sizable cake budget, one would think that there wouldn’t be a problem finding the perfect cake. But you guessed it. The total cake package eludes me.
I can find the perfect cake, but I hate the icing. I find the perfect icing but the cake is too dry. The cake and icing are perfect but the presentation looks like something from a bad day in home ec. Better yet, the cake looks fantastic but it taste like cardboard and wallpaper paste. Why oh why can’t I find my perfect cake?? I’m beginning to give up hope. I knew that I was a cake connoisseur but I never imagined that I’d be a cake snob.
The Engineer and I have three or four more tastings to go to. Hopefully, I’ll find someone who will be able to provide me with the wedding cake I’ve waited 27 years for. Until then, Boy continues to reap the benefit of my cake snobbery. Lucky guy!
Below are some pictures of our first cake tasting. The cake was ok, but the icing was horrible (imagine a stick of butter Crisco loosely combined with granulated sugar. Bleh!) The vendor will remain nameless.
The cupcakes were cute, but would they be good?

The cake lover can’t even bring herself to finish the cakes. So Sad.
